MATERIALITY
I created a series of models to test how certain materials would work together so that my building would be a building with a tasteful exciting palette which also relates to the surrounding context.
I Began by testing engravings into the plaster ( to mimick red brick) This pattern follows the brick work in the immediate area of Radnor street/ Cross street. However, by staying flush and being complimented by the light wooden window extrusion , it takes on a new more modern form.
The application of wood flooring and window extrusion elevates the space, perhaps a consideration when designing the cantilevers. If finished with timber it would relieve any seemingly tight spaces below.

This model tested the idea of a concrete rendered ceiling in the ground floor apartments. Although the material selection could be oppressive in a different space, due to the high ceilings (3.4 meters) and strong amount of natural light , the screed could work as an interesting internal ceiling finish and has an uplifting aesthetic. .
LOCAL SOURCED MATERIALS..
When deciding materials I ordered samples to increase my understanding of their tactile nature. As a housing scheme founded on a more cohesive community, all building materials should be sourced and manufactured locally.

TIMBER CLADDING

Placed on the underside of the balconies the light tones of the timber should elevate the space . Pressure treated pine and pine decking for the external finishes and decking.

GEOPOLYMER CONCRETE
​
Structural concrete would use geopolymer concrete due to its dominance in environmental properties compared to conventional concrete. Geo polymer relies on industrial by products therefore minimises the need for processed natural materials , whilst still mantaining its strength.

Furthermore geopolymer uses organic compounds in its cement therefore has a lower embodied energy in comparison to conventional concrete.

BRICK CLADDING.
​
To maintain continuity with the immediate context red brick cladding will be used. Furthermore, the use of conventional materials means that the construction process can use local suppliers and workforce.

TILES
​
Terracotta tiles will be used in the private external spaces, This almost over exposure of scarlet tones , could look exciting in well lit spaces such as the courtyard , private balconies.
​
White marble tiles in the bathroom will contrast well the precast concrete panels , giving a modern clean aesthetic.
